As the Able Moving & Storage team wraps up another successful year, we want to reflect on our efforts in the community. Able has long supported nonprofit organizations and charities with complimentary services and donations (in addition to our scholarship program and eco-friendly disposable practices). But 2024 proved itself a banner year for our philanthropy, which included work with long-time and new collaborators.

A fixture of the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, communities, Able is the DMV’s premier moving and storage provider. Owned and operated by locals, our team works with families, individuals, businesses, and other organizations on short- and long-distance moves. Able stands out in the moving industry thanks to our commitment to customer satisfaction and ability to tailor our services to individual needs. Call (703) 330-3772 to learn more about our work and request a free moving estimate.

How Able Supported the Community in 2024

Over the past year, Able worked alongside the following organizations:

  • The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
The Able team continued our in-kind sponsorship of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Metro DC Chapter this year by transporting materials for and setting up 6 fundraising events between May and September. The CFF supports research efforts into a cure for cystic fibrosis, and Able has worked with its Metro DC Chapter for 3 years. We look forward to continuing our work in the new year!

  • Second Story & NAIOP Northern Virginia Snack Pack
A Northern Virginia-based nonprofit that supports struggling children and families, Second Story is another organization that Able has worked with for several years. In 2024, we provided in-kind moving services to its residential programs, and our office staff came together to donate 50 turkeys and 5 Thanksgiving baskets for the holiday.

Able’s work with Second Story has intersected with its membership in the Northern Virginia Chapter of NAIOP. Able provided in-kind services as their storage and transportation sponsor for the 5000 snack packs that the Developing Leaders Committee donated to Second Story. Following this, Able was the transportation sponsor for NAIOP Northern Virginia’s Holiday Donation and Wrapping Party, which supplied over 70 gifts for local youth during the holiday season.

  • The Ronald McDonald House
The Ronald McDonald House Charities is a nationwide organization that helps families with sick children access the healthcare they need. In April this year, Able provided 200 care kits for its Greater Washington, DC, chapter. We were also in-kind sponsors of the DC Chapter’s 14th Annual Red Shoe 5K after renting out an onsite storage trailer for 5 months at no cost to the organization. Their 5K event raised significant funds to promote the well-being of local children and families.

  • Dream Finders Homes
Although they’re not a nonprofit, Dream Finders Homes’ employees wanted to make a difference during the holiday season and turned to Able for help. On their team’s behalf, we transported and delivered 200 bikes to Women Giving Back, who will distribute them to local children.

At Able Moving & Storage, community and customers are the inspiration for our work with nonprofit organizations and support for college-bound students. They also make the holidays an especially impactful time of the year. In honor of this fast-approaching season, we’d like to spotlight the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Metro DC Chapter. Over the past 3 years, Able has donated logistical support for the CFF’s fundraising events, led by Project Manager Erika Molina and Coordinator CJ Weverink. We hope that you’ll join us in supporting this organization and its commendable cause.

We recently sat down with Erika and CJ to discuss their involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, their approach to managing these events, and how their teamwork has helped make a difference for the CF community:

Can you tell us about your role in coordinating/project managing the logistics for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s summer fundraising events?

Erika: The first year was intensive because we were learning what needed to be done, which supplies went to each event, and where. Since gaining some event experience, it has been smooth sailing. We use maps to put up tents, drink stations, and registration supplies. Everyone on the team has assigned roles, so everything flows nicely.

CJ: My role involves overseeing the process of getting essential items to and from the events. I work closely with the CFF team to develop a move plan that aligns with their needs and ensures everything runs smoothly on event days.

How do you (and the Able team) ensure that everything runs smoothly during high-stakes events?

Erika: Our main goal is to support the CFF Foundation, so we check in frequently during the event to ask if they need additional help. They often get volunteers for these events, but we can jump in to fill those roles if required.

CJ: I focus on preparation, communication, and teamwork. First, I work with the Able team and CFF to create a clear and consistent move plan, ensuring everyone knows their roles and responsibilities. The Able team helps me anticipate potential challenges, such as inclement weather, and we address them proactively.

On the day of the event, we stay organized and flexible, maintaining constant communication with the CFF team and adjusting plans in real time if necessary. Our primary goal is to ensure the event runs smoothly without logistical issues, allowing CFF to focus on its essential work.

Is there a specific CFF fundraising event you enjoy coordinating/project managing most?

Erika: The Brewer’s Ball at the Wharf! It is a beautiful location and everyone enjoys it!

CJ: It would have to be the Brewer’s Ball. I was invited to attend last year, and it was such a great time with fantastic food, live music, and (of course) brews! The atmosphere was friendly and fun, but you could still feel the strong dedication to the cause. It was also the first time I witnessed firsthand how the foundation raises awareness for cystic fibrosis.

How has Able’s support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation impacted your awareness of this disease?

Erika: To be honest, I had little knowledge of this disease before Able began supporting fundraising events and I joined as the Project Manager. Through attending these events, I have learned a lot about it, and unfortunately, heard many stories about how it impacts children and their families.

One that stands out to me is a little girl speaking in Spanish about her experiences living with this disease. It is often difficult for the Latino community to speak out about illnesses, so I found her ability to tell her story publicly very impactful.

This past September, I loved having a group of my colleagues attend the Manassas 5k so they could see how vital this organization is and why we support them.

CJ: I’ll admit, before managing these projects, I wasn’t fully aware of what cystic fibrosis was. After working with the foundation for several years, attending their events, and even coordinating ones in my hometown, I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the disease and its impact. It’s been eye-opening, and raising awareness is one of the foundation’s key goals. I’m proud that our work can support that effort meaningfully.

Able Moving & Storage is Proud to Support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Able Moving Project Manager Erika Molina and Coordinator CJ Weverink embody a generous and grateful attitude we can all learn from. We look forward to our continued partnership with the organization, and we hope everyone looking to support the DMV community this year will consider donating to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Metro DC Chapter. Moving to a new place can be exciting, but packing, organizing, and transporting everything can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re unsure about the costs involved. Many factors—from the weight and volume of your belongings to the distance you’re traveling—will determine the final price. Yet getting an accurate moving estimate will help you avoid unexpected fees and ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

Able Moving & Storage is the trusted moving partner for families and individuals throughout the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area, including Reston, VA. Our trained, professional movers and state-of-the-art equipment enable us to deliver seamless local, long-distance, and international moving services. Call (703) 330-3772 to experience a hassle-free move with the region’s leading residential moving company!

Below, we discuss how Able calculates its residential moving estimates:

Factors That Impact Moving Costs

Seasonality and Timing

Peak moving season, typically the late spring and summer, usually commands high rates due to the demand for services. Conversely, moving during the off-season (such as late fall or winter) comes at a much lower price.

Shipment Weight and Volume

One of the most significant determinants of residential moving prices is the shipment’s total weight and volume. The exact price point will depend on how much space your belongings take up in the truck and, for long-distance moves, its total weight in pounds. Nevertheless, Able’s moving experts can make a reasonable estimate of weight and volume before your moving day.

Pro Tip: Decluttering and donating unnecessary belongings before your move can reduce your shipment’s weight, lowering these costs and streamlining the relocation process.

Local vs. Long-Distance Moves

Distance dramatically impacts moving costs. Local moves (typically within 50-100 miles) are billed hourly based on the number of movers, truck size, and time required, whereas long-distance moves (such as interstate relocations) factor in mileage, fuel, and tolls. Additional services, like residential storage solutions, may also increase costs based on the space and duration needed.

Hourly Labor

Hourly labor costs will comprise a significant portion of residential moving expenses. These charges include the time required for loading, transporting, and unloading your belongings. The number of movers involved, as well as the complexity of the job (such as navigating stairs or disassembling furniture), can further increase a move’s time and cost.

How to Get an Accurate Moving Estimate in-home moving estimate Reston VA

When speaking with Able about your move, you can choose between an over-the-phone estimate or a no-cost, no-obligation in-home estimate. For the most accurate pricing, we recommend scheduling a visit from one of our Professional Move Consultants, who will assess your belongings and provide a detailed written estimate

During your in-home consultation, Move Consultants account for all items (including those in discreet spaces like attics or basements) to ensure nothing is overlooked. This personalized approach helps identify potential additional costs, such as packing services or storage, so you can enjoy comprehensive, upfront estimates

Receive a Comprehensive Moving Estimate in the Washington, DC, Metro Area, including Reston, VA!

Understanding the factors influencing moving costs can help you plan a budget-friendly relocation. You can avoid unexpected surprises by choosing the right moving company and scheduling an in-home moving estimate. The counterparts to our on-the-ground movers, Able Moving & Storage’s coordinators manage high-level administrative and customer service elements of moves. One coordinator who has come to excel in both these areas is Matthew Miles, who specializes in senior move management. Despite being relatively new to the Able team, Matthew has quickly stepped up to help during the busy season by supporting our customers to the best of his ability. His sincere commitment to our customers’ success and his passion for this work sets him apart.

We recently sat down and spoke with Matthew about his career, time at Able, and life outside work:

  • How long have you been with Able? What were you doing before working at Able?
I’ve been with Able for about 6 and a half months. Before joining Able, I worked with another moving company where I focused on senior moves as a relocation manager. I heard about Able through colleagues in the commercial moving department, and they had great things to say about the team here.
  • What is your current role, and what positions have you held before?
In my previous job, I was a relocation coordinator. I really enjoy helping people and providing excellent customer service. I have a particular passion for working with seniors, ensuring they receive the time and quality of care they need.
  • What do you like about the moving industry?
I love the ever-changing challenges. No two days are ever the same!
  • What do you like about working at Able? Favorite events?
I really enjoy the camaraderie here. My favorite event so far has been the mac and cheese cook-off we had in March!
  • What do you like to do when you are not working?
I like bowling, I’m interested in Anime, and a fun fact about me is that I’m from Hawaii, so I love spending my vacation time going home to visit family. I actually met my wife there right out of high school.
  • What is the best career advice you live by?
Never stop learning. I learned this from watching my mom, who is a lifelong learner and earned her Master’s in special education at 50. It was incredibly inspirational. My wife is also a lifelong learner, which motivates me as well. She is constantly improving herself and forcing me to do the same.
  • Do you have any favorite customer success stories?
Before joining Able, I had a client struggling to downsize their home to move to a senior community. They had so many belongings that most people would have turned them away. I made sure to help them, provided resources to handle everything, and reassured them throughout the process. Seeing their appreciation once their house was sold was the best feeling!

Work with the Washington Metropolitan Area’s Best Moving Company

Please join Able Moving & Storage in celebrating Matthew and his dedication to making every move a success! The commercial warehouse functions are integrated into all Able Moving & Storage commercial services, including Project Management, IT Logistics Management, Short- and Long-Term Storage, Furniture, and E-Waste Disposal/Recycling. On top of the day-to-day warehouse functions, the team also preps all commercial trucks for each unique job and then offloads and handles items labeled disposal, storage, or donations when they return. Our Commercial Warehouse Manager, Dave Ross, oversees warehouse tasks, staffing, supplies, equipment, billing, scheduling, sanitation, and safety. He ensures all storage is organized, secure, and kept in the right place. The title of Warehouse Manager is not one that everyone can manage, but despite this mountain of work, Dave handles it all with a smile and a sense of humor.

We sat down with Dave to chat about his experience in the moving industry and about his positive leadership:

  • How long have you been with Able? What were you doing before working at Able?
I have been part of Able for 2 ½ years. Before working at Able, I was with a warehouse flooring company. But I have been in the moving industry for over 30 years.

  • What is your current role, and what position have you held before?
I’ve been the warehouse manager since joining Able Moving & Storage. I have held many positions within the moving industry, including residential moving, State Department, military, commercial, project management, and warehouse.

  • What do you like about working in the moving industry?
When I was a young mover, I really loved the extra income from receiving tips. Now, I enjoy the routine and the ability to have family time in my day. In general, I also like the day-to-day challenges within problem-solving and logistics. It makes each day interesting!

  • What do you like most about working at Able?
I like the laid-back and friendly atmosphere. It can get busy and stressful sometimes, but it’s an overall positive environment, and we tackle issues as a team.

  • What do you like to do when you are not working?
My top priority is spending quality time with my wife, son, and the dogs. I used to coach rec and travel baseball. I also enjoy watching NASCAR, football (Go Bears!), and baseball (Go Mets!).

  • What is the best career advice you live by or try to share with others?
One of my favorite quotes is, “Follow good leadership and, in the absence of good leadership, be the one to provide it.” Another one is, “It’s all ON you, but it’s not all ABOUT you.” It helps me to think of the bigger picture when faced with challenges.

I like a lot of Jocko Willink’s books. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to develop leadership or management skills.

  • Did you have a mentor within the moving industry?
I did! His name was Roger Moss. He really helped show me the ropes of the industry, and my potential for a career, and was an overall great guy. I wish I could share all my stories, but it would take forever!

  • What is your go-to moving tip?
My number one tip is HIRE PROFESSIONALS!

The most recent YOU2 Award recipient is Max Llaneza, a Professional Move Consultant for Able Moving & Storage’s residential department. Max and our other Move Consultants are our customers’ first point of contact when booking a move and specialize in providing accurate in-home estimates, moving, and packing solutions. Max was nominated for the YOU2 award for his initiative, responsiveness, and ease in finding ways to accommodate customers. He will drive out of his way, work outside the regular operating hours, and even help customers after their moves are completed. He does so with a smile and a positive attitude, and his efforts are recognized and appreciated by customers and Able staff.

We chatted with Max to learn more about his experience as a certified Move Consultant and how he ensures the success of our residential moves:

  • How long have you been with Able? What were you doing before working here?
I have been with Able for 5 years. Before working at Able, I was self-employed and working in international moves, world appliances, and shipping. My family was in international moving for 40 years with a focus on diplomat moving, and they still have many connections and friends in the international moving business.

  • What is your current role, and what previous positions have you held?
Even though I was interested in joining the international team at Able, there were no positions available at the time. Senior management encouraged me to join the residential side of the business since I had moving experience and I could transfer those skills to the other sector.   They were right!  I have enjoyed it very much and it has worked out great since then!

  • What do you like about working in the moving industry?
I’ve done it my whole life, ever since I was a teen in my family business. I think I have a natural knack for it. I like to take my time, be confident in what I am selling, and let the service and products speak for themselves.

  • What do you like about working at Able?
I like everything that the company has to offer for its employees. We still have the benefits of a big company, but it feels family-oriented. That was really important to me when looking to join a company after years of being self-employed and working with my family. Compared to other moving companies, we have a deeper level of customer service. Our customers are people, not just numbers.

  • What are some of your hobbies or passions?
I am a certified professional bowler and love playing in my league in my free time. I also enjoy playing golf and used to play softball before my knee surgery. I tend to keep active. I have four kids – two boys and two girls who are now adults, so I try to spend time with them as much as possible.

  • What is the best career advice you live by?
My dad always emphasized that the customer must always be happy. Happy customers turn into loyal customers and will always be your best marketing. So, when mistakes happen (and it is inevitable that they will at some point), take it personally and make it right so your customers are always satisfied at the end of the day.

These services include relocating and reconfiguring office furniture, equipment, and other supplies.

This is exciting news for our Office Moving Division, which is already having a busy year. “The timing couldn’t have been better. We hope our existing reputation in the office moving industry precedes itself and that we can continue to grow while providing our expertise to government relocations,” says Vytas Janascius, Director of Commercial Operations.

Here are some of Able’s Core Capabilities:

  • Professional Packing
  • IT Logistics Management
  • Warehouse Distribution
  • Recycling/Decommissioning
  • Inventory Management
  • Pre-Move Planning and Project Management

While Able is new to the GSA Schedule, we have been servicing government clients for years and are familiar with government procedures. “Our crews are certified in moving best practices, have experience handling classified information, with cleared background checks and drug screenings,” says Rick Fraser, Assistant Operations Manager. Our understanding of specific processes creates a smooth transition for booking, coordinating, and performing government moves with Able Moving.

Besides our expertise, Able’s commitment to customer service sets us apart from the competition. Every move includes a designated move coordinator to act as the client liaison and advocate throughout the moving process. Our coordinators will work with you to customize your move to the process that serves your organization best.

Stephanie Mastbrook is a Senior Relocation Coordinator in Able Moving & Storage’s residential department. Able’s coordinators handle not only the administrative coordination of a move but also its customer service, and Stephanie excels at both. She cares deeply, going above and beyond to assist her customers. Her can-do attitude motivates her to help teammates as well as manage wellness and philanthropy initiatives for the entire company. She also uses her artistic abilities for events like the annual Manassas Holiday Parade and she has built a reputation around the office for her astonishing Halloween decorations each year. Stephanie was recently promoted and won a YOU2 award for her outstanding performance.

We caught up with Stephanie to chat about what makes Able so significant to her:

  • How long have you been with Able, and what were you doing before working here?
It was my 10-year anniversary in April of this year! Before working at Able, I was an Assistant Manager at Hour Eyes. Through networking, I met some employees of Able who had great things to say about the company culture. So when I learned of an opportunity, I applied and started as an assistant. Not long after starting, I was promoted to coordinator. Recently, I received a promotion to Senior Relocation Coordinator, which feels awesome!

  • What do you like about working in the moving industry?
I like working in an area that I have expertise in. I know it well after 10 years! I also really enjoy helping our customers because I understand moving is stressful. Sometimes I’ll talk through the worrying points of their moves, work through any issues, and provide solutions and tips. I always love when people say I’ve alleviated stress after a conversation like that.

  • What do you enjoy about working at Able?
I love the camaraderie. We are a team that is great at resolving issues. When it comes to bringing solutions, most are open and receptive. You must have a solid team when you spend your days with them.

I really enjoy it when we are all together, but I don’t have a favorite event exactly. Some recent events that were a fun time were the BBQ cookout and Easter Egg hunt. The family environment we have just makes everything a good time when we come together.

Also, I want to add that I really appreciate Able’s philanthropic spirit. It feels great when we join together to support different organizations. Whether it’s a 5k, food drive, or fundraiser, we do a great job of supporting local charities. One special memory was gathering and distributing donations for Inova Children’s Hospital—I keep the thank you letter they sent me because it is such a special memory.

  • What are some of your hobbies or passions?
I really enjoy crafting and building with my hands. I do all kinds of crafts and 3D wood puzzles. I also like to read adventure and mystery books. Any other free time is mostly with my family, friends, and pets!

  • Do you have any career advice you would like to share?
Care about what you do if being successful is important to you. Achieving success is difficult if you have a “don’t care” attitude. I had an employer a long time ago that really helped me by pushing me to be better and I earned his respect.
