The entire Able Moving & Storage team would like to congratulate its 2024 Scholarship winner Eduardo Mendez-Anastasio. A Woodbridge resident, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio recently graduated from Gar-Field Senior High School and is attending the University of Virginia this fall as a Rodman Scholar on a full academic scholarship. He plans to study mechanical engineering at UVA.

As a high school student, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio distinguished himself as a varsity athlete and co-captain of the Gar-Field wrestling and lacrosse teams. He attended the Summer Residential Governor’s School for Math, Science, and Tech at the University of Lynchburg last year; additionally, he earned the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair’s award for outstanding achievement by the American Chemical Society (ACS) (11th grade). Finally, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio completed significant volunteer work in his community through after-school events, tutoring, and food drives.

We recently sat down and chatted with Mr. Mendez-Anastasio to learn more about him:

  • You mentioned a few times in your essay that the principles of the military are a common thread within your life. Can you share more about how being surrounded by the military has shaped your views on leadership?
Although my parents were not in the military, family and friends around me were. From them, I learned the basic traits of being a leader. As my education continued, I grew closer connections to those in the military and was able to apply the skills I had learned in school through sports and clubs.

  • If you could lead any organization or movement in the world, what would it be and why?
I would lead a movement that focuses on the issues of global warming and pollution. I believe this issue is very serious and needs to be fixed. The reason why I would choose this also goes back to research projects I have done in class revolving around limiting carbon dioxide in the air.

  • If you could have dinner with any historical leader, who would it be and why?
It would be one of our founding fathers, either George Washington or Benjamin Franklin. I would talk with them about the steps they took when establishing a country. For George Washington, I would also focus on his abilities in war and leading men in combat.

  • If you had a superpower that could help you in a leadership role, what would it be?
My superpower would be the ability to gain attention. When being a leader, I believe it is most difficult to get the attention of others, especially those who may not want to be told what to do or lead. This ability would allow me to not worry about being heard when leading others.

  • As you prepare to study mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia, how do you plan to apply your leadership skills in this new environment?
During my first year at UVA, I plan to join clubs in the school that interest me. These include sports, outdoors, Hispanic, and engineering clubs. I plan to find a group/club I enjoy and then apply for a position in that club. In addition, I plan on doing research in college, in which I hope to be in a group. Here, I will not assert a leadership position but instead work with others to effectively conduct research.

Able Moving & Storage is Proud to Support Our Community’s Next Generation of Leaders!

Please join the Able Moving & Storage team in congratulating Mr. Mendez-Anastasio on his accomplishments and bright future. We are inspired by his dedication to success and look forward to his prospects at UVA and beyond!

We are honored to announce that Able Moving & Storage has won the 2024 Outstanding Corporate Citizen of the Year from Volunteer Fairfax. This prestigious award recognizes a Northern Virginia business for its exceptional community contributions over the past year and stellar reputation in corporate social responsibility.

Since our organization’s founding in 1987, community support has been a core value for Able Moving & Storage. Over the years, we have forged long-standing partnerships with local nonprofits such as Second Story to combat homelessness and food insecurity in our region. Additionally, our commitment has extended to other vital organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Highlights from 2023 that contributed to our recognition by Volunteer Fairfax include:

While Able is deeply grateful for this recognition, our team acknowledges all the remaining work. As former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm and civil rights activist Marian Wright Edelman famously said, “Service is the rent we pay for living on this earth, for being. It is the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time.” With this spirit, Able Moving & Storage is more committed than ever to continuing our efforts and empowering our employees to engage in meaningful community service.

Supporting local communities as well as areas affected by national emergencies has always been in Able Moving & Storage’s genetic structure. Now more than ever, with all of the challenges and uncertainties that the COVID-19 pandemic is causing, it’s important to provide consistent support. Among the most important of these challenges is ensuring the well-being of those in need. Able Moving & Storage has partnered with several local organizations within the Northern Virginia and Greater Washington D.C. area to ensure that those in need are being fed and taken care of during this crisis.

As seasoned local house movers that have spent over thirty years working for families and businesses throughout Prince William County, our business is deeply rooted within the community. Our desire is to give back to the community through our services as well as through our actions. That’s why, since this crisis began, we’ve worked to support those most vulnerable to its effects.

How Our Company of Local House Movers Serves The Community

One of the ways we’ve been helping our community is by working with local charity and community resource organizations. Currently, we are working with Second Story, Great American Restaurants, and World Central Kitchen to transport hundreds of meals to families throughout the area.

Meals from Great American Restaurants and World Central Kitchen are packed up by our volunteer movers into our trucks. Then, they are delivered to various shelters as well as community and resource centers, such as the Culmore Family Resource Center, Springfield Family Resource Center, and the Annandale Safe Youth Project.

About Our Partners

Happy Team

Great American Restaurants is an organization of partnered restaurants across the Northern Virginia area that, along with working together toward ensuring high-quality food service, also take part in providing food to the less fortunate through their community kitchen. The Great American Community Kitchen helps distribute meals to first responders, front-line workers, and families or individuals that are food insecure within the community. Part of their program is to match each meal purchased with two meals donated. This generosity of spirit and dollars is why we chose them as one of our partners in this fight against hunger.

World Central Kitchen is a non-profit NGO that has worked to provide food to poor and starving populations around the world and is currently organizing efforts throughout the U.S. to ensure that families and communities sustain their health and wellness by providing them with meals. From their center near Nationals Park, we have packed, transported, and delivered hundreds of meals from them to various local community centers and charities throughout the area. By supporting their efforts, we hope to act as a foundation for the community and ensure that everyone receives the food and nutrition they need during these difficult times.

Second Story is a youth resource organization, providing shelter, guidance, food, and many other vital services for homeless and struggling young people or families. For Great American Restaurants, World Central Kitchen, and Able Moving & Storage, they are an essential aspect of our distribution, opening their numerous centers for us to deliver meals and resources to. With them, we have established a network for providing hundreds of struggling people meals that they and their families need.

Able Moving & Storage had the honor being the Driving Range and Putting Green Sponsor for Re/Max Gateway of the Washington DC Metro Area’s 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. Held on May 6, 2019, at the Chantilly National Golf & Country Club, this tournament benefitted Team hELLAtough and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through Jason Smith’s (2019 Man & Woman of the Year) fundraising campaign.

About Team hELLAtough

Team hELLAtough was created to raise funds for young Ella Borowski who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), is a rare and aggressive form of leukemia with significantly poor prognoses. Ella had an AML mutation with prognostic factors that were much more favorable and is currently in remission. Her family as well as their friends continue to support and raise funds to LLS so that blood cancers are a thing of the past and nobody has to suffer or endure the struggle of it.

As sponsors of the charity golf event, the Able Moving & Storage team participated in a friendly game of golf and enjoyed meeting new and old faces in the community. As we took some time to reflect on the event and connect with our fellow attendees, it was difficult not to imagine Ella as one of our own. We fully empathized with the Borowski family and understand how deeply cancer can affect not just the [patient, individual, whatever], but her family and community as well.

We were proud to take part in and become a dedicated sponsor for the event alongside other caring individuals in our community. While we had a tremendous time fundraising for LLS, we were even able to witness our team golf a 68 in Best Ball under clear skies and warm weather. Not to mention, as a result of the charity event, over $245,000 was raised for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Able Moving & Storage would like to thank RE/MAX for allowing us to take part in the charity event as sponsors and hope to participate again next year!

About The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest non-profit health agency that is dedicated to blood cancer and finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and other cancers of the blood. In their endeavor to improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families, they work tirelessly to raise funds for blood cancer research on a global-scale along with providing free access to information and support.

Able Moving & Storage Congratulates Our 2018 Scholarship Recipient!

Able Moving & Storage is proud to announce our scholarship recipient for 2018, Katibeth Blalock of DePaul University in Chicago, IL! Able Moving & Storage awards this scholarship annually to a deserving young entrepreneur of today to encourage their passion of owning their own business tomorrow. We are honored to award Ms. Blalock Able Moving & Storage’s 2018 Moving Scholarship for her exemplification of hard work, perseverance, and enthusiasm.

At the age of 12, Ms. Blalock’s passion for music combined with her desire to buy her dream violin motivated her to develop a wine glass beading business. With an additional invitation to perform in Ireland, she grew her unique business and raised the funds to do what she loves: play her violin. Her wine glass designs successfully sold in multiple stores throughout Charleston, SC, with the support of her community. As a result of her determination to achieve this goal, she was awarded South Carolina Youth Entrepreneur of the Year (2012).

Ms. Blalock has performed as a solo violinist since she was nine years old and has also played with Carnegie Mellon University and numerous orchestras. Ms. Blalock graduated from Winchester Thurston School this year, and she is currently a student pursuing a double major in psychology and advertising at DePaul University in Chicago, IL.

Growing up, Ms. Blalock worked for several different businesses owned by family and friends. She has expressed that those experiences inspired her to “make a big impact in the small-scale business world.” Ms. Blalock’s desire for independence and entrepreneurship continues as she hopes to run her own business, incorporating her passion for design, in the future.

Able Moving & Storage is thrilled to support Ms. Blalock’s educational and business pursuits by awarding her the Able Moving & Storage’s 2018 Moving Scholarship. We look forward to hearing more about Ms. Blalock’s continued success. Able Moving & Storage will continue supporting such driven individuals with awarding more scholarships, and we encourage student entrepreneurs to apply for our next scholarship due on April 15, 2019!

Able Moving & Storage is always on the lookout for employees that are experienced and passionate about helping our customers move from point A to point B. We take pride in the fact that we are assisting our clientele by reducing the stress and anxiety typically associated with a move, by making the move as smooth and worry-free as possible. In order to complete this task, we require that our employees are highly trained, professional, organized, and friendly. Below, we have listed some of the most important qualities we look for when bringing on a new mover into our network of employees.

  1. Professionalism is a key factor we look for when hiring new employees.
  2. Advanced organization skills come in handy when packing and moving items so that they are protected from damage, and easy to access later on.
  3. Attention to detail is a great quality to have as well since extreme care must be taken when handling the valuable and often fragile belongings of our customers.
  4. Great customer service skills are a requirement, as we want to make sure our customers feel at ease when communicating with staff members.
  5. Having a friendly disposition is very important when you work for our company. Our customers are welcoming our employees into their homes, so having a friendly smile and maintaining good manners goes a long way.
  6. Being a good problem solver is a great skill to have as a mover. There may be situations that require advanced critical thinking to resolve them quickly and effectively.
  7. Having the ability to lift heavy objects is, of course, a critical part of the job. If you enjoy working out and staying fit, this could be a great match for you!

In summary, Able Moving & Storage is picky about who we hire. We want only the best service and experience for our customers, so the above list is only a small portion of the requirements and standards that we hold our movers to!

Finding the right moving company for your needs when hiring movers in Arlington VA is important. Are you willing to trust your most treasured items to just any moving company? You want the utmost care to be taken with your items, but you also want the best rates and friendly service.

When you know the right questions to ask when hiring movers in Arlington VA, you can ensure the best moving services during this stressful time. Making this big transition in your life can be easy by asking the best questions when hiring movers in Arlington VA!

How Many Years Have You Been in Business

A well-reputed company that’s been in business for years is what you want for your moving services. Companies that are well established in the Arlington VA area make your moving experience easy and hassle-free.

Their years in business will speak for their success—a moving company that doesn’t make customers happy and overcharges for their services wouldn’t be able to survive in the business. While you’re hiring movers in Arlington VA, find out how many years the company in question has been in business—then let their experience tell you if they provide great moving services!

Are You Licensed and Insured

Moving companies that are licensed and insured don’t cut corners. They ensure their movers and drivers are protected in the event that something goes wrong. Movers insurance also protects you in case your items are damaged—you’ll want to ask how your items are protected and who is responsible for the damage when hiring movers in Arlington VA.

Always be sure to check the company’s license number and insurance policy when hiring movers in Arlington VA. License numbers are easily checked online and you can ask for a copy of your mover’s insurance policy or call the company to verify they’re insured. This protects both you and your moving company!

What Do Your Rates Cover

When hiring movers in Arlington VA, the best price isn’t always the lowest one. Some companies will compensate for their lack of licensure or insurance by charging you really low rates—but low rates could mean a high cost to you with damaged or missing items.

Low rates might seem attractive at first, but until you understand what those rates include and what kind of company you’re dealing with, look elsewhere. The best moving companies offer competitive rates and provide the best services. While hiring movers in Arlington VA, ask about what exactly their rates cover.

Are You Active in the Community

Moving companies that are active in their community tend to treat their customers with care and give back to the places they love and live in. When hiring movers in Arlington VA, a company that’s active in the community cares about where they live and the work they do. This means they care about their customers too, because they’re an integral part of that community.

Ask what events they participate in, if they donate any of their services, goods, or income, and how they give back to your hometown. When you’re hiring movers in Arlington VA, asking about their community involvement is like asking how much they care—and you need a moving company that cares.

When hiring movers in Arlington VA, ask these questions. Your potential hires should have several years in business for substantial experience, be fully licensed and insured, have great rates, and be an active part of the community in which they live and work. Hiring movers in Arlington VA is easy when you know what questions to ask!

Since 2013 PulteGroup has been involved with the Built to Honor Program which provides mortgage-free homes to deserving wounded veterans across the country. Divisions across the nation have worked together with suppliers, vendors, and contractors to support this effort and have built 40+ new homes. The Mid-Atlantic division recently surprised Sergeant Matthew White with a ground breaking ceremony for his to-be built mortgage free home at Pulte’s Centex Cherry Hill community in Dumfries, VA.

Pulte homes has asked Able Moving & Storage to work with them to receive new furniture from the manufacturer/warehouse/store, deliver and install the furniture for this Veterans new home once it is complete. Because Pulte is one of Able Moving & Storage’s largest accounts and we are also dedicated to supporting our veterans – it was a no brainer for us to do this.
