The entire Able Moving & Storage team would like to congratulate its 2024 Scholarship winner Eduardo Mendez-Anastasio. A Woodbridge resident, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio recently graduated from Gar-Field Senior High School and is attending the University of Virginia this fall as a Rodman Scholar on a full academic scholarship. He plans to study mechanical engineering at UVA.

As a high school student, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio distinguished himself as a varsity athlete and co-captain of the Gar-Field wrestling and lacrosse teams. He attended the Summer Residential Governor’s School for Math, Science, and Tech at the University of Lynchburg last year; additionally, he earned the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair’s award for outstanding achievement by the American Chemical Society (ACS) (11th grade). Finally, Mr. Mendez-Anastasio completed significant volunteer work in his community through after-school events, tutoring, and food drives.

We recently sat down and chatted with Mr. Mendez-Anastasio to learn more about him:

  • You mentioned a few times in your essay that the principles of the military are a common thread within your life. Can you share more about how being surrounded by the military has shaped your views on leadership?
Although my parents were not in the military, family and friends around me were. From them, I learned the basic traits of being a leader. As my education continued, I grew closer connections to those in the military and was able to apply the skills I had learned in school through sports and clubs.

  • If you could lead any organization or movement in the world, what would it be and why?
I would lead a movement that focuses on the issues of global warming and pollution. I believe this issue is very serious and needs to be fixed. The reason why I would choose this also goes back to research projects I have done in class revolving around limiting carbon dioxide in the air.

  • If you could have dinner with any historical leader, who would it be and why?
It would be one of our founding fathers, either George Washington or Benjamin Franklin. I would talk with them about the steps they took when establishing a country. For George Washington, I would also focus on his abilities in war and leading men in combat.

  • If you had a superpower that could help you in a leadership role, what would it be?
My superpower would be the ability to gain attention. When being a leader, I believe it is most difficult to get the attention of others, especially those who may not want to be told what to do or lead. This ability would allow me to not worry about being heard when leading others.

  • As you prepare to study mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia, how do you plan to apply your leadership skills in this new environment?
During my first year at UVA, I plan to join clubs in the school that interest me. These include sports, outdoors, Hispanic, and engineering clubs. I plan to find a group/club I enjoy and then apply for a position in that club. In addition, I plan on doing research in college, in which I hope to be in a group. Here, I will not assert a leadership position but instead work with others to effectively conduct research.

Able Moving & Storage is Proud to Support Our Community’s Next Generation of Leaders!

Please join the Able Moving & Storage team in congratulating Mr. Mendez-Anastasio on his accomplishments and bright future. We are inspired by his dedication to success and look forward to his prospects at UVA and beyond!

Amidst an industry wrought with non-competition agreements for executives and hourly employees alike, Able Moving & Storage doubles down on its thirty year history of declaring them unnecessary.

Manassas, VA., June 4, 2018-

Recent shake ups in the regional moving industry reviving concerns about rampant use of non-competition agreements for executives, salespeople, and even hourly workers, just make Able Moving & Storage President Joe Singleton proud of the environment he has helped shape at Able Moving & Storage.

“I have never asked someone interested in joining our family company to sign one of these agreements, and I never will,” says Singleton. “The locks on the doors at Able Moving & Storage are only there to keep people out, not to keep employees in.”

Clear indications that the Singleton family policies are attractive to the marketplace were witnessed by the entire moving industry when the professional core of the now defunct Office Movers chose Able Moving & Storage for its new home. Released from their non-competition agreements, all were welcomed at Able Moving & Storage within days.

Former Office Movers executive Kim Dize, now Director of Business Development at Able Moving & Storage, posits that best practices in the industry are not a secret to anyone. “Without non-competition agreements, the industry leaderboard that is already changing would look drastically different inside of six months.”

Jonathan Pollard, competition lawyer and principal of Pollard PLLC, a litigation boutique focused on competition law, says “More often than not, companies are using non-compete agreements to prevent fair competition. Given the widespread, rampant corporate non-compete abuse, the only solution to restore fair competition in the markets is an outright ban on employee non-compete agreements.”

States like California do ban these agreement altogether, and Pollard sees this trend growing. “I expect more states eventually will go that direction, but it’s a process that will play out over the next ten to twenty years.”

500% growth over the last six years and on its way to becoming a 50 million dollar company, Able Moving & Storage is brimming with talented employees, and welcomes conversations with anyone that may wish to join them.

Mike Murphy, Vice President of the commercial division at Able Moving & Storage and another Office Movers transplant, echoes the idea that the industry knows who is fair and who is not. “Consistency between what is promised and what is delivered to employees and customers alike is a welcome relief for me,” he says.

The family company the Singletons started in 1987 was just voted Independent Mover of the Year by the American Moving and Storage Association. Based on selection by a panel of industry experts rather than on self-reported figures, Able Moving & Storage is appreciative and grateful for the recognition by its industry peers.

The absence of a non-competition agreement obliges companies to treat its employees fairly in every respect, and Able Moving & Storage President Joe Singleton sees this as a business advantage for them, now and in the future. “We work extremely hard at making employees at our family-owned company extremely happy, we always have and we always will.”

Able Moving & Storage takes home prestigious Independent Mover of the Year Award out of the 3,500 companies represented at the American Moving & Storage Association’s Annual Awards Night.

Manassas, VA., April. 17, 2018 –

Unrivaled customer service in the industry, outstanding philanthropic efforts, environmental responsibility, and rocket-like business growth in all of its divisions just earned Able Moving & Storage one of the most coveted awards in the moving industry.

The family-owned moving company, started by the Singletons with one truck in 1987 out of their basement, now employs over 200 people, has a fleet of 75 trucks, occupies a 300,000 square foot multi-use headquarters, and will soon be a $50 million dollar company.

“They are an outstanding honoree for this highly-esteemed award,” said Scott Michael, AMSA President and CEO. “The moving and storage industry salutes Able Moving & Storage for its innovation and leadership.”

Watching company founders Joe and Jim Singleton accept the award was a moving enough experience for Able Moving & Storage International Director Michele Eckert to immediately cause her to send an email to every employee of the company:

“Joe and Jim wanted so much to make sure that they did not let any of you down when they accepted the award, and they did not. I wish each of you were here to see the humility they displayed. The reason I am writing this is not just to express my heart and pride tonight, but to express how much of it is because of you. I AM SO PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF THE ABLE FAMILY!”

Employee happiness at Able Moving & Storage is no secret in the industry. Able Moving & Storage is unique in the industry in that it requires no one to sign a non-compete agreement, stating emphatically that “the locks on our doors are designed to keep people out, not people in.” Able Moving & Storage employees enjoy the best benefits in the industry.

Giving back to the various different community groups that Able Moving & Storage works with has been a pleasure for Vice President Jim Singleton, and he looks forward to working with the AMSA and Move for Hunger more in the coming year. “Industry responsibility is expected of us by our customers and employees, and will always be a part of Able Moving & Storage’s culture,” says Singleton.

Best practices in business led Able Moving & Storage eight years ago to strategically divide the company into its current quad structure of commercial, residential, international, and storage components. Each of these divisions respectively grew 285%, 63%, 22%, and 15% over the last year.

Amidst the major growth taking place at Able Moving & Storage, President Joe Singleton is especially proud of the consistency with which Able Moving & Storage has treated its customers.  “If we don’t take care of our customers, someone else will.”

Commercial growth rate of 300%, 12,000 residential customers, 200 employees, and 22 million in projected revenue this year render Able Moving & Storage ready for more.

Manassas, VA., Oct. 03, 2017 – “Buying other moving companies and real estate expansions can both get us more employees and more space, both of which we need,” says Able Moving & Storage CEO Joseph Singleton, “and we are in a great place to look at both.”

Since the Singleton family started the business in 1987, the philosophy of Able Moving & Storage reinvesting its profits has allowed the Northern Virginia moving company to be ready for opportunities at every stage of growth, and this one seems to be no different.

Growth in all divisions have prompted satisfied customers to lobby the company to open satellite locations in areas near them all over the Eastern United States.

“Extremely happy customers have asked about our ability to service them locally in RaleighCharlotteCharlestonNashvilleHuntsville, and even San Antonio,” says Steve Kuhn, Chief Operating Officer at Able Moving & Storage. “Acquiring existing operations in one or more of these places may be easier then starting from scratch, but we are not ruling that out either,” he added.

Expansion options in the local market are not as mutually exclusive. The company’s existing need for additional space in the market could easily be aided through the acquisition of another local company, adding needed employees and more customers along the way.

Having just completed a 50,000 SF building at its Manassas headquarters brings their SF total there to 250,000, and it’s not enough. Leasing another 50,000 SF in Gainesville has helped, but what Able Moving & Storage needs is another 20-30 acres capable of at least 300,000 SF of development.

“We have made absolutely sure our real estate brokerage relationships have always been good,” says Kuhn. “Not only are we counting on that community for expansion ideas and answers, they themselves are some of our best commercial clients.”

In its rapid growth, Able Moving & Storage seems to have lost none of the focus it keeps on its primary goal; to offer superior service to their customers. The company firmly believes it is what separates them from the pack, and is the reason for their growth. Recent newcomers to the family owned business echo this sentiment.

Mike Murphy, former operations manager at Office Movers, knows this is just the beginning for the company. “The customer service here is unbelievable, this story is just starting to get out. I will see many of my industry colleagues in the hallways at Able Moving & Storage in the future. It’s just a good situation.”

Realizing their rapid expansion path, and even triple digit growth in some of its divisions, the company recognizes that new proposals and opportunities are a forgone conclusion, and Able Moving & Storage welcomes every one of them. Company President Jim Singleton says, “We did not get where we are today by not listening to people. Just because our wheels are always turning does not mean we are not listening.”

New website, additional buildings, more employees, and fleet expansions, all come from the same old attitude towards its customers.

Manassas, VA., Aug. 08, 2017 –

“Every aspect of our company’s growth can be traced back to how we treat our customers,” says CEO Joseph Singleton, “and we listen to every piece of feedback we get from every one of them.”

300% company growth in the past five years, 36% year to date growth, and the massive emergence of its commercial division in recent years, certainly suggest that Able Moving & Storage treats its customers very well.

“Recent constrictions of the industry as a whole are spotlighting the practices of the companies that remain, and we welcome this scrutiny,” remarks Able Moving & Storage’s Chief Operating Officer Steve Kuhn.

On a recent Maryland move involving over 750 employees, Jason Peterman, Senior Director of Corporate Real Estate and Workplace for 2U Inc., said, “The quality of the crews we worked with were unlike any I’ve experienced in the past and I’ve worked with three of the other large companies in the area.”

Differences in the efforts Able Moving & Storage makes on behalf of its customers were immediately apparent to senior salesperson Chris Cox when he arrived from the recently defunct Office Movers. “I just never knew it could be like this,” he says, “My customers are absolutely thrilled with the level of service they are receiving from Able Moving & Storage.” Chris just landed the contract to move Amtrak headquarters in Washington D.C. later this summer.

Meg Hargreaves, Chief Operating Officer at CQ Roll Call, had this to say about Able Moving & Storage after their Washington D.C. summer move:

“Our employees literally went home Friday afternoon and arrived at our new headquarters ready to go Monday morning. We had 100% business continuity despite moving over 200 people across town.”

Making sure that the secondary organizations and individuals Able Moving & Storage comes into contact with are happy is also important to Able Moving & Storage, and has become a great source of referrals for them. In a recent move for The Washington Business Journal, Marc Reeves, its Sales Support Manager, had this to say about Able Moving & Storage, “The Previous landlord was pleased with our departure and our new landlord was pleased with our arrival. That says a lot about a moving company.”

Merritt Properties, who manages millions of square feet and thousands of tenants in the area, had this to say about their experience with the family moving company:

“Simply put, Able Moving & Storage was amazing. They just got it done. They did such a good job that we felt it was extremely important to go out of our way to let them know we felt this way,” says Property Manager Mindy Redd.

Outstanding customer service at Able Moving & Storage is not new, but it is now costing them money, and they are more than happy to pay it. These investments the company are making into its infrastructure will facilitate the move to the top of its Industry that is already well underway.

“Financially supporting Able Moving & Storage’s growth in a responsible manner is crucial,” says Chief Operating Officer Steve Kuhn, “We are in this for the long haul.”
